THE GREAT COCONUT ADVENTURE
Our BAFTA award winning project The Big Coconut Adventure is an online environment for children to explore the world of monkey band, the ZingZillas, learning about music along the way. Set on an island, there are four different areas to explore, each with 2 musical games. In the Coconut Hut, splat berries in time to a rap to make a smoothie or mix up different sounds in the kitchen using the blender, the juicer and the taps! In the Clubhouse, you can drag-and-drop different musical instruments to make the ZingZillas play a sequence or to make the ants sing out in a tone matrix. In Todd’s Garden you can harmonise the hummingbirds by matching musical chord pairs or paint high notes and low notes with musical paintbrushes to make stage backdrops. As you explore the island you are rewarded with coconuts and once you’ve found all 4 it’s time for the Big Zing.
The Big Zing uses uses motion detection to deliver a physical gaming experience on the web: perfect for such a young audience. By using bitmap comparison technology the game triggers user interaction based simply on movement – you can play your virtual guitar simply by miming strumming: the ultimate air guitar! As you play, you can actually see video capture of yourself playing along with the band on your chosen instrument, which animates with your movement. The ZingZillas actors were shot against green screen and composited against a background, which incorporates the personalised backdrops you painted in Todd’s Garden. This is a truly ambitious, interactive experience, never before attempted for this age group.
ZingZillas is a fantastic example of a truly collaborative project – we worked very closely with animation company, Blue Zoo, who created the character animations throughout as well as the in-house interactive team at CBeebies.
